The first album of Akira Ando and the JAPS „Jazz As Pure Spirit“ was recorded in July 2021 in Brandenburg Germany. Six musicians and the sound engineer got together for two days in the house of our flute player Felix Komoll and recorded 12 songs. All the songs were composed by Akira Ando except for „Return of Neptune“ by our piano player Izumi Ose.
The group has been growing since it has started as a trio with Han Sato (ts) and Zam Johnson (drums) in 2014 and now, 6 musicians are involved. Specially the participance of Shiomi Kawaguch added the strong japanese color to the band. Some of Akira Ando’s compositions such as „GOZE“ and „JONGARANGA“ has influence by Japanese traditional music and Shiomi Kawaguchi plays shamisen (Japanese traditional string instrument) on those songs. Our flute player Felix Komoll also is adding the special sound which reminds me of Shakuhachi (Japanesebamboo flute).
It is very interesting that the CD was released on 15th of August 2022 which is the anniversary of the end of World War second.
